Tips to Flatter Your Facial Shape With Eyeglasses

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Ben Franklin wore eyeglasses. Elton John wears eyeglasses. Both men are celebrities in their own right – both men have had very recognizable eyeglasses. The difference being Ben Franklin had little selection to choose from when he needed glasses to see – his glasses became synonymous with his image. Elton John created an image and a personality to go with his eyeglasses. So, how do you find the PERFECT pair of eyeglasses? There are a few things rarely thought about in order to find that perfect pair.

Facial Shape

Most people barely consider their facial shape to be an issue when getting their hair cut and styled – but their hairdresser knows better. So, why should you consider your facial shape in order to buy a pair of eyeglasses? Like a hair cut gone wrong, glasses can also skew your appearance.

Oval faces are unique in that any frame will flatter their shape but only if the size of the frame is proportionate to the size of the face. Make a square face softer by wearing rounded or curved frames that sit up a bit higher in order to downplay the chin – thin metal is an optimum choice but thinner plastic will work well too! On the opposite side, round faces should choose frames that are more angular or have straight lines in a black or tortoise shell color to minimize fullness. Round-shaped faces should also avoid round frames at all costs.

Oblong faces – long and narrow – need frames that minimize the length of the face and cover the center of the face. Aim for triangular shaped or rounder shaped frames to shorten the face or wide rectangular frames to maximize width of the face. Oblong faces should also choose frames with embellishment towards the sides or frames in bold colors to broaden the face. If your temples are a bit on the wide side, your diamond or triangular shaped face should be adorned with smaller geometric or oval frames that sit lower on the face to minimize the distance between your temples.

Nose shape

If your nose is large, it’s OK – just be sure to pick slightly oversized frames to balance the face. Smaller frames will make the nose look bigger. Small noses require a high bridge to lengthen the nose and make it proportionate to the face. If you have a long nose, select frames with high arms to draw attention away from the length of the nose and toward the temples – rimless frames are perfect for executing this properly. To minimize a long nose, try glasses with a double bridge – like the aviator style.

These are not rules – mostly suggestions in finding the right eyeglasses for you. When buying a frame, remember to add your personality to it! Colors are a great way to show the world what YOU want to show them. Black portrays sophistication and mystery, while gray and silver show a cultured and educated person. Light pinks and purples are innocent and feminine but violet is the color of royalty while being subtly sexy. Blues and green give off a calm-air and make you look approachable. Red is bold, sexy, and powerful but should not be worn by the meek and timid. What ever look you want to portray – color is a key ingredient! Colors add personality to your frame and make them fashionable – so don’t be afraid to try out new colors with newer styles!

Use these tips as suggestions but make sure you play around and have fun with different frames – you never know until you try!

Eyeglasses and Your Child: How Not to be a Geek

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Up until about fifteen to twenty years ago, young children needing glasses would refuse to wear them because it looked like the glasses were swallowing up their face. All that was really available for small faces were these plastic frames with big thick rims. Those kids that could get by with not wearing their glasses all of the time would take them off once they got to school so other children wouldn’t make fun of them. This is despite the fact that having trouble seeing the chalkboard was the main reason for the glasses in the first place. Then there were those kids who had to wear them all of the time because they couldn’t see without them. Those were usually the children having to endure names such as “four eyes” from various other kids throughout the day.

Now when we look at a classroom full of children, we find that many of them are wearing eyeglasses. We may even find that those kids that were making fun of other children for wearing huge glasses are now adults who have to have them themselves. Such conditions as nearsightedness and farsightedness do not spare many individuals. Fortunately, sight screenings at school help spot these conditions before they can really have a toll on a child’s schoolwork. What results is that child having to have glasses, but, fortunately, getting glasses nowadays is not as painful as it used to be.

Styling

Eyeglasses can be considered cool if they fit properly. Many eyeglass distributors offer children’s eyeglasses so that your child has a perfectly proportioned pair of eyeglasses on his or her face. It isn’t like twenty years ago when the options were limited because not as many children were being diagnosed with eye conditions. Now large designer companies are making eyeglasses for kids that look fantastic on them. You just have to be mindful of what looks best on your child or they could be made fun of for their glasses not looking right on them.

Things to take into consideration:

? The size of your child’s face
? The shape of your child’s face
? The shape of the glasses being tried
? The size of the glasses being tried

Your child’s face shape and size is going to be a huge determining factor in what size and shape of glasses they wear. There are frames that are square, round, and oval. You can try all of these to see which looks best. Frames are also made out of both wire metal and plastic, so you can also see which looks best. Some are even rimless, which can give the illusion that your child is not wearing glasses.

If your child has very bad eyesight, then you can see about having thinner lenses placed within the frame. Technology is now available that allows you to have the lenses thinned without hampering the prescription. This eliminates the illusion that your child is looking through the bottom of a glass soda bottle.

Glasses are cool

If you take into consideration shape, size, and lens thinning options, then your child is going to look really great in his or her new glasses. It isn’t so much of a curse as it used to be, but it can be if the glasses are not the right fit. By having the right fit, other kids are either going to tell your child that they like their glasses or they’re not really going to care that the glasses are even there. Most importantly, a good fit is also going to ensure that your child is going to be able to see everything that needs to be seen.

Simplify Your Eyeglass Selection

Friday, April 16th, 2010

Let’s face it, at one point or another, just about everybody can benefit from a pair of eyeglasses. Some of us need vision correction at a young age, while others do just fine without eyeglasses until later in life. It is an extremely safe statement to say that at one point in your life, you will benefit from the use of eyeglasses.

You have accepted the fact that a pair of glasses will only help you, now how do you weave your way through all the available styles to choose from? Let’s break it down into easy decisions to help you out.

For starters, when are you going to where your glasses? If you are nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism you will probably be wearing your glasses a good portion of the time (or at least when you want to see without contact lenses). On the other hand, if you only require correction for reading, you may be looking for an entirely different style of frame.

Eye wear comes in two main families of material; metals and plastics (also referred to as zyls). Metal frames are usually a little more streamlined and subtle. Zyl frames can be manufactured into just about any color and shape you can imagine. Yes, there are other frame materials available, such as wood and hybrid composites, but in general you will be deciding between zyl and metal eyeglass frames. For the sake of decision making, we will refer to rimless and semi-rimless frames as metals since most of them are comprised of metal based temples and nose-pieces.

Plastic frames usually have a saddle type bridge that fits securely over your nose, while metal frames come with adjustable nose pads. Bridge style decision should be made based on the rest of the frame; unless you know you absolutely do not want nose pads, for example. In that case, you will want plastic frames. Wasn’t that an easy decision?

From there you will want to consider frame and lens shapes. A good rule of thumb is to match the shape of your brow with the upper portion of the frame. That will at least get you started and based on how those look, you can try on some other pairs.

This is just enough information to get you started and help you pinpoint which style of eyeglass frame will work best for you. Remember, all in all, have fun with your eyewear. You may want a sleek and refined pair of rimless frames for those serious times, and it is perfectly alright to get a little wild and crazy with some fun colorful specs when the mood strikes.

Choose New Glasses Frames

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Since most people keep a pair of prescription glasses for an average of two years, when it becomes necessary to choose new glasses frames, you should take your time to assure you are selecting frames that you are happy with. Many optometrists employ experts to help their patients select glasses frames based on what type of prescription lenses they need. You may also be lucky enough to get the assistance of someone who can help you choose glasses frames that are flattering as well. If you are left to your own devices though, there are few things to consider when choosing new glasses frames.

Bear in mind that, while most styles of frames accommodate any lens type, there may be some circumstances in which the frames you’ve chosen will not work with your prescription, so you may want to select two or three at first. To possibly narrow the selection, be sure to ask the optometrist to show you if there is a selection of frames that are paid for or discounted by your insurance company.

Choosing glasses frames:

Pay attention to both the shape of the frame and the color. Certain shaped frames do not flatter certain shaped faces. Those with oval faces can wear nearly any shape, but rounder faces should avoid round frames. Also, if you have small, close inset eyes or a small nose, be careful not to select frames that overpower your features. Similarly, those with square jaw lines should avoid square or boxy frames.

Since many of the same style glasses frames come in different colors, focus on selecting the proper size and shape frame before the color. If you wear your glasses continuously, you might consider neutral or muted colors rather than bold primary colors. If your personality warrants bright and bold, choose a color that will flatter your skin tone. An olive complexion might be striking with rich burgundy colored frames, while pale complexions can be accentuated with a cool, deep green color.

Features:

• Some frames are rimless, leaving only the arms to have substance and color.

• Some glasses frames have preformed bridges that eliminate the nose pads, which bother some people.

• If you are constantly removing and replacing your glasses throughout the day, you might want a pair of glasses frames with spring-hinged arms.

Whichever type of frame you choose, be sure your glasses are both comfortable and attractive. That might mean trying on several pairs. If you have trouble making decisions, there are some optical retailers who will allow you to try a pair for a period of time and exchange them if you don’t like them.
